Journey Through The Gospel of John: John 1:1-5

John 1:1-5
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
1 In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.
2 He was present originally with God.
3 All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.
4 In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.
5 And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].
1
Jesus is God. This is the point of John’s gospel. Not only that we would believe and come to eternal life, but that He would show beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus was fully God. Here John says in the beginning. John is speaking about from eternity. God has no beginning and no end. Jesus has always existed with the Father. Before anything was created there was God.
Jesus is referred to the Word. It is through the Word that all things were created. God has revealed Himself through His Word. The Son came to reveal the Father. Jesus is co-equal with the Father. For salvation to truly take place in the life of a person they must believe that Jesus is God. When we come to saving faith in Jesus Christ we believe He is God and we build our lives on this revelation of truth.
John says the Word was God Himself. He was not a god. He was God Himself. God is the trinity. He is a three part being known as The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Throughout the four gospels we see this revealed time and time again. Jesus in chapter 16 of John’s gospel begins to speak of the coming of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus is baptized we see the three members of the trinity present. On the mount of transfiguration we see the Father states this is my Son in whom I am well pleased. Jesus is God and when our lives are built upon this truth is when all things change for all eternity.
2
Jesus was with the Father in the beginning. He has always been with the Father. He is God. He has no beginning and He has no end. One of the greatest attacks on Jesus by the devil is to claim that He is not ultimately God. But the way Jesus proved once and for all that He is God is through the resurrection. No one before Jesus overcame sin, death, and the grave. Jesus willingly laid down His life, never sinning, took the sin upon Himself, and therefore if anyone places their faith and trust in Jesus Christ they are forgiven and born again.
3
All things came into existence and were made through Jesus Christ. The Father and the Son worked together perfectly in the creation of all that we see on the earth. It was through the spoken word that all things were created. Jesus is the word made flesh. He is worthy to be praised because He alone is God. This is why we believe He is God because it is through Him that all things were made and came into existence.
4
In Him was life. In Jesus true life is found. During John’s gospel there are seven I am statements. Jesus says I am the bread of life. Jesus also says I am the way, the truth, and the life. Life alone is found in Jesus. He holds all things together by His mighty power. Not only is life found in Him, so is light. This light is the truth of who God is. One of the themes in John’s gospel is that between light and darkness. Darkness stands for the lies and deceptions of Satan. Those who live in darkness are those who are blinded to the truth. But those who have come to know Christ have been illuminated to the truth. Jesus said I am the light of the world. Our world is filled with darkness and in Christ Jesus we truly not only find life but we find light. In Him we no longer live in darkness, we live in the light and glory of who He is.
5
The light shines in the darkness. No matter how much Satan tries to snuff out the gospel or remove the truth of Jesus Christ from this world, he cannot. The darkness will never overcome the light. For on the day Jesus suffered and died at Calvary, Satan believed he had conquered the Living God. When He put Jesus to death, he truly believed he had finally conquered the purposes and plans of God.
What he failed to understand is this was the Father’s plan. He so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son. Jesus who knew no sin would become sin for us. He would be the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. He would humble Himself becoming a servant and willingly give His life. Simply because of His love for us. The only way our debt could truly be paid and we restored in right relationship with God was the blood of a perfect human sacrifice. Life of the individual is found in the blood (Lev 17:11). It is only through a blood sacrifice that sin can be atoned for (Hebrews 9:22). Darkness will never conquer light and the enemy will never be able to stop the purposes of God because God number one is all powerful, number two He is all knowing, and number three He is everywhere all at once. When we know Jesus we know the Living God personally. When we understand all we have in Christ we understand how feeble and weak Satan truly is. He is not to be feared, he is to be conquered. But a right understanding of Jesus Christ and who we are in Him is essential to live in this reality.
