Sermon Notes 4/13/25: Hail King of The jews

Hail King of The Jews

Today is Palm Sunday

Today Jesus will ride into Jerusalem

But a few days later the King of all Kings will humble Himself and face a level of humiliation that is unthinkable

Why did He choose this?

Because of our sin and our pride

It is our sin that separates us from God and it is our pride that destroys us

Matthew 21:1-11

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5   “Say to the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

humble, and mounted on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.” [1]

1.  The King Rides Into Jerusalem

a.   Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on the 10th of of Nissan

b.  John 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. [2]

c.   John 12:12  The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”[3]

d.  Based on God’s law the Lamb was to be examined on the 10th of Nissan

                                             i.     This was the day that Jesus rode in

e.   He fulfilled Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.[4]

                                             i.     Jesus made it clear that He is the Messiah

f.    The people are shouting Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”[5]

                                             i.     This is a Messianic Title

g.  Throughout much of Jesus ministry He had often kept from revealing publicly that He is the Messiah

                                             i.     But the day and hour has come for the will of the Father to be fulfilled

2.  The King is Scourged

a.  Matthew 27:26 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

                                             i.     Scourging involved being whipped with pieces of bone and metal

ii.     It would lacerate the skin like ribbon

b.  Every event of those things surrounding Calvary shows Jesus love for us

                                             i.     Each step of the way He is fulfilling the will of the Father

ii.     Isaiah 53:7       He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. [6]

iii.     As he is stripped and tied down, He doesn’t cry out but willingly takes the punishment we deserve

3.  The King is humiliated

a.   Matthew 27:27-31 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. 28, And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. [7]

                                             i.     The word battalion or also translated cohort would be around 600 soldiers

1.  This group of soldiers would be demonically empowered and inspired to humiliate the Son of God

                                           ii.     Jesus is stripped

1.  His body would be covered in open wounds

2.  The material from the scarlet robe would adhere

iii.     The purpose of the scarlet Robe was to mock Him as the so called King of the Jews

1.  The devil and all of hell truly believe they were going to win over God and His purposes

iv.     They cry hail King of the Jews

1.  His crown was a crown of thorns

a.   Pushed into the head and flesh of Jesus

b.  Every thorn would have shot pain through His body

2.  The reed was his scepter

a.   They took the reed and hit Him in the face

3.  They knelt before Him

a.   They spit in His face

4.  Why did Jesus endure all of this?

a.   Because we are lost

                                             i.     Our sin separates us from God

ii.     Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. [8]

b.  Our pride keeps us from God

                                             i.     Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. [9]

ii.     The main reason people reject what Jesus has done is they see no need for a Savior

c.   The Son of God humbled Himself because of His love for us

                                             i.     Philippians 2:7-8 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.[10]

d.  Ultimately in Humility victory was achieved

                                             i.     Philippians 2:9-11 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
