Sermon Notes Sunday 8/15/2021
God of The Impossible: Let There Be Light
Jesus said in Mark 9:23 23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
Many today are facing difficult and what seem like impossible situations
The nation of America seems as if it is facing an impossible situation
During my time of vacation I spent time relaxing and spending time with my family
But I also spent time in prayer and in my private moments thought about much that our nation and people are facing on an individual basis
We are bombarded with information on a daily basis
Sadly much of this information is not based on truth
But when people look at their lives individually and look at what our nation is facing, when it seems we are facing impossible odds we can become crippled in our faith
We can allow discouragement to grip us
We can become paralyzed by fear and instead of walking by faith and making decisions based on the word of God and our trust in Him, we can instead be driven by fear
But how we overcome fear is having a right understanding of who God is and His word
Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:7 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
God calls us to walk by faith and a right understanding of who God is enables us to walk by faith
It enables us to live victoriously over fear, doubt, discouragement, and despair.
Today I want to look at the very beginning
In Genesis 1:1-5 it says In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Before anything was created or existed there was God
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit do not have a beginning or an end
God spoke all things into existence.
It says in the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth
We are not told about how the angels were created but we know that each of them were created
As God created all things He spoke them into existence
Psalm 148:2-5
2
Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
3
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
4
Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.
5
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created,
The angels were created and when God creates anything it is perfect and good
But any some point in the past when the angels were created, an angel known as Lucifer arose in rebellion
Today he is known as the devil
He rebelled against God and took a third of the angels with him
In verse two it says Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
When the bible says the earth was formless and empty or in other translations it says without form and void it speaks of chaos
Many believe that when Satan rebelled and was cast out of heaven that is why darkness and chaos was upon the earth
We are told that in the midst of this darkness and chaos that the Spirit of God was hovering
God had not abandoned the earth
The darkness cannot overcome the Living God
God is the creator of all things
He is the author of life
It was into the chaos and the darkness that God said let there be light
When God spoke let there be light, light came forth and invaded the darkness and the chaos
That which was out of order was brought into order
It says that God saw that the light was good
The light was called day and the darkness was called night
In the word of God we always see this contrast between light and darkness
Those who live in fear, live in darkness
Fear can overwhelm us like a dark cloud and can throw us into confusion and chaos
But it is God who desires to bring order and restoration to our lives
Jesus said in John 8:12 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
When we examine the creation account we see that God did all things in order and by His sovereign plan
There is nothing that God does in the earth by accident or coincidence
God is never surprised by anything
He is all knowing, He is everywhere at every time, He is all powerful
But often times we can become so overwhelmed and focused by what is happening on the earth or in our lives that we lose sight of this
On each day of creation the Lord spoke things into existence
On Day One He said let there be light separating the day from night
Light invading the darkness
It is the truth of His word that invades the darkness of our lives and brings order
Day 2 God said let there be a vault or a firmament to separate the water above from the water below
God created the sky through His spoken word
Day 3 God spoke the land and vegetation into existence
He said let the water be gathered to their place and called them seas
Day 4 God spoke the sun and moon into existence
One to give light to the day and one to give light to the night
Day 5 God created the birds of the sky and the fish of the seas through His spoken word
The Lord said for them to be fruitful and to multiply
Day 6 God created all the animals on the land the wild as well as the livestock
God created man in His image
He created them male and female
On the Seventh day He rested
Not because He was tired or needed to rest but to set it aside as a day to be holy and honored by Israel in the future
When we look at all of this we see that God spoke all things into existence
This was done according to the plan and purpose of God
God knew when He created the angels that Lucifer would rebel
God knew that when He created Adam and Eve that they would fall and they would sin
God is never surprised
But all that we see upon the earth is created by the spoken word of God
God created all things out of nothing
Through His spoken word
Many who don’t know Jesus personally would say this is impossible
They would say things came to be by evolution or they will point to the big bang theory
They will deny the existence of a creator
But when we know Him personally and we know the depths of His word, we know that He is the God of the impossible.
Jesus said to Him who believes all things are possible
No matter what we face in our lives God is greater
No matter how overwhelming the darkness seems God is greater
No matter the challenges our country faces, our God is greater
But the question is do we trust Him?
When we understand this truth it will shape the way we live
It will shape the way we pray
In this hour God is calling His people to pray
God is calling us to trust Him
He is calling us to bring every battle we are facing before His throne
To trust Him in the process
To let go of our feelings, our doubts, and our unbelief
God is calling us to look to His word and to build our lives upon the promises of His word
Everything we see is spoken into existence
