You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

David Campbell Jr.

Matthew 5:43-48

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The word perfect here means perfect, mature, complete. What does mature Christianity look like? Someone who walks in love at all times. However, it doesn't mean we live a life of complete perfection—that is impossible. Only one was able to live without sin, and his name is Jesus.

But God calls us to walk in love. This is a timely message for the times we live in. Our nation and the world are divided. As people surrender their hearts and minds to deeper levels of sin, darkness invades and influences more profoundly. Yet, in the midst of great darkness, God has called us to thrive. He has called us to be filled, led, and guided by the Holy Spirit.

This requires communion and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. It is by spending time in His presence that we are filled and empowered. Daily, we need a fresh filling to live from a place of relying fully on His grace and love. The only way His love can be manifested in our hearts and lives is if we are truly abiding in Him. The Holy Spirit is not only our God; He is also our most intimate friend. May we trust and obey, simply following His leading. May our lives be built upon the truth of His word.
