Scripture: Romans 15:5 (ESV)"May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus."
A Small Church In A Rural Town
Several years ago, a small church in a rural town split over something as simple as the color of the new sanctuary carpet. One group insisted it should be red, symbolizing the blood of Christ; the other said blue, representing the living water. Meetings became tense. People stopped serving together. The unity they once shared seemed lost over something that did not affect the gospel at all.
One Sunday morning, the lead pastor called everyone together for prayer. Instead of arguing, they prayed for humility, patience, and love. After an hour on their knees, something broke. Tears replaced tension. Hearts softened. They agreed that neither color mattered more than Christ Himself. They chose harmony over preference, unity over winning. They ordered a neutral carpet, and revival later followed. Souls were saved not because of carpet color, but because the church returned to the heart of Christ.
Devotional Thought
Paul prays in Romans 15:5 that God Himself would give believers endurance and encouragement to live in harmony. Unity is not natural; it is supernatural. It requires endurance when personalities differ, encouragement when relationships stretch thin, and a Christ-centered focus above personal opinions.
Harmony is not the absence of disagreement; it is the presence of love greater than disagreement. When we align our hearts with Jesus, unity becomes possible. The church becomes a testimony, a symphony of grace that the world cannot ignore.
The only way we can walk in unity is through His grace and the help of the Holy Spirit. We must choose to live and walk in love. The body of Christ is diverse, and God designed it that way. We must be willing to listen to where others are coming from. We cannot fall for the enemy's trap and let division and discord take root among us.
Today, I encourage you to pray for those who are difficult to love. Pray that God would give you eyes to see them as He does. Jesus shed His blood for all of humanity. No matter how much someone gets under our skin, we must choose to love. We need to let go of offenses. We should be quick to forgive. We must focus our hearts and minds on heaven.
Quote
"Unity does not mean we think alike, but that we love alike in Christ."
Action Steps
Think of one person you are at odds with. Pray for them sincerely this week.
Choose one act of encouragement to build harmony in your church or family.
When conflict arises, pause before responding. Ask: "Will this glorify Christ or myself?"
Meditate on Romans 15:5 daily. Let it shape your attitude, words, and relationships.
Personal Reflection Questions
Where have I allowed preference or pride to disrupt harmony with another person?
Do my words and tone reflect the endurance and encouragement that God shows me?
What practical step can I take today to promote unity in my home, church, or workplace?
Prayer
Father, You are the God of endurance and encouragement. Shape my heart to reflect Yours. Help me pursue harmony with others, not through my own strength, but through the grace of Christ. Break down walls of division, soften my speech, and make me an instrument of peace. May my relationships bring honor to Jesus and reflect Your love to the world. Amen.
