Excel in the Grace of Giving
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV) "But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving."
Reflection for Men
As men, we are often wired to excel. We push ourselves in our work, in the gym, in our skills, in leadership, and in providing for our families. The Apostle Paul acknowledges that the Corinthian believers were already excelling in many areas: strong faith, powerful speech, deep knowledge, sincere earnestness, and genuine love.
But Paul doesn’t stop there. He challenges them—and us—with a direct, masculine call: “See that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
Giving is not a side issue for Christian men. It is a grace—something empowered by God’s Spirit that reflects the heart of our King, Jesus Christ, who gave everything for us.
Many men today are generous with their time at work or with their physical strength when needed, but we can be stingy with our resources when it comes to the Kingdom of God. We might justify it: “I work hard for my money,” or “I need to take care of my own family first.” While providing for your household is biblical (1 Timothy 5:8), Paul is calling us higher—to excel in giving, not just meet the minimum.
True biblical giving is:
Sacrificial – It costs something.
Cheerful – Not out of guilt or pressure (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Faith-filled – Trusting God as our ultimate Provider.
Kingdom-focused – Investing in the Gospel, the church, the poor, and those in need.
Jesus didn’t give us 10%. He gave His life. As men who follow Him, we are called to reflect that same generous spirit—not just with money, but with our time, talents, and treasure.
Questions for Honest Self-Examination (Man to Man)
In what areas of my life do I currently “excel” (work, fitness, hobbies, family provision)?
How does my giving compare to those areas? Am I excelling in the grace of giving, or just getting by?
What fears or excuses keep me from giving more generously (security, control, future worries)?
Who in my life (church, ministry, widow, single mom, missionary, or brother in need) could I bless this week through sacrificial giving?
Prayer for Men
Lord, You have blessed me with strength, skill, and resources. Forgive me for the times I have excelled in my own pursuits but fallen short in the grace of giving. Stir my heart to trust You more deeply. Make me a man who gives generously, joyfully, and sacrificially—just as Christ gave Himself for me.
Help me lead my family by example in generosity. Let my giving reflect Your heart and advance Your Kingdom. Remove any spirit of stinginess from me and replace it with the joy of cheerful giving.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Action Step for Today
Identify one specific way you can excel in giving this week:
Increase your regular tithe or offering by a meaningful percentage.
Give an unexpected gift to someone in need (a brother struggling, a missionary, or a local ministry).
Volunteer your time and skills in a way that “costs” you something.
Men, the world needs strong, generous leaders who reflect the giving heart of God. Don’t just be a good provider—be an excellent giver. Excel in this grace.
Memory Verse: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
