Family Devotional: Trusting God in Hard Times

Theme: Navigate Hardship

Faith Fact: I can trust God to answer.Bible Story: Zechariah and Elizabeth’s Wait is Over – Luke 1:6-25, 57-66

Memory Verse:Psalm 34:19 – “The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.”

Let’s Talk About It (Parent reads):

Life can be really hard sometimes—even for people who love God. We might pray for something and not get the answer we hope for right away. We may feel confused or even wonder if God hears us.

But here's something amazing: Even in those tough times, God is always with us. Sometimes, He lets us wait so we can learn to trust Him more. And His timing? It’s always perfect.

In our story today, we learn about two people, Zechariah and Elizabeth. They loved God and obeyed Him, but they didn’t have any children—and they were very old. They prayed and waited for many years. Then one day, God surprised them with the answer they had been waiting for. He gave them a son—John the Baptist—who would prepare the way for Jesus!

Read the Story Together:

Luke 1:6–25 and 57–66

Take turns reading it, or summarize it in your own words.

Family Discussion Questions:

  1. How do you think Zechariah and Elizabeth felt while they were waiting?

  2. Have you ever prayed for something and had to wait a long time?

  3. What does this story teach us about God’s timing?

  4. What are some ways we can show trust in God while we wait?

Memory Verse Challenge:

Write or print Psalm 34:19 and put it on the fridge or a mirror. Each week, practice it together. If your kids memorize it by the end of the month—they get to choose a surprise!

Family Prayer Time:

(Encourage everyone to pray aloud if they’re comfortable)

Prayer:

Dear God,Thank You for being with us—even when life is hard. Help us to be patient while we wait for Your answers. Remind us that You always hear our prayers and that Your timing is perfect. Teach us to trust You more each day.In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity Idea: "Waiting Jar"

What You Need:

  • Jar or container

  • Small pieces of paper

  • Pens or crayons

What To Do:Have each family member write or draw one thing they are praying or waiting for. Fold them and put them in the jar. Each week, pull one out and pray for it together as a family. Watch how God answers over time!

This devotional helps children see that even when things feel hopeless or slow, God is always working, and He always shows up at the right time.
