The Greatness of God
Today we will examine the greatness of who God is
Many times false teachers will elevate man above God
Somehow making God subserveant to man
We must understand where this lie begins
Isaiah 14:12-14
12 How you have fallen from heaven,
morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.” [1]
As we examined over the last two weeks we are not little gods
We are created in the likeness and image of God
The greatest thing God has ever made and created is human beings
From Ron Parsley
Why does God say, Ask of me? Why does He say that? Because He can’t do it on His own! He can’t get what He wants on His own because He placed you in authority on this earth. Do you hear me? From praise the Lord TBN 2003
From T.D. Jakes
We were made out of God. When God created Adam, He created him from the dust of the earth. He put His mouth on him, blew in him the breath of life. He became a living soul. God said I wanted to see what I looked like, so I made you to be in my image. You have my DNA. You are created out of me. You are a derivative of me. You are my picture in the earth. From Kenneth Copeland
I was shocked when I found out who the biggest failure in the bible actually is… The biggest one in the whole bible is God…Now the reason you don’t think of God as a failure is He never said He’s a failure. And you’re not a failure till you say you’re one from Praise the Lord TBN 1988
Adam committed high treason; and at that point, all the dominion and authority God had given to him was handed over to Satan. Suddenly, God was on the outside looking in… After Adam’s fall, God found Himself in a peculiar position… God needed an avenue back into the earth… God laid out His proposition and Abram accepted it. It gave God access to the earth and gave man access to God… Technically, if God ever broke the Covenant, He would have to destroy Himself. From his book: Our covenant with God pages 8-11
As we examine these statements the thing we need to ask is this true?
Are they based on the bible?
It would simply seem that many of these people read into scripture what they want scripture to say
Many of them have prostituted the name of Jesus Christ to gain wealth, influence, and abuse the people of God
But today we look at the greatness of God
The greatness of who He is and that He is omniscienct, omnipresent, and omnipotent
1. The greatness of God
Psalm 145:3 (CSB) 3 The Lord is great and is highly praised; his greatness is unsearchable. [2]
i. greatness means greatness; great deeds, some act that is held in esteem and honor[3]
Psalm 96:4 (CSB) For the Lord is great and is highly praised; he is feared above all gods. [4]
ii. There is no one greater than the Living God
iii. He is unmatched
Psalm 145:5-6 (CSB) 5 I will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty and your wondrous works. 6 They will proclaim the power of your awe-inspiring acts, and I will declare your greatness., [5]
iv. The greatness of God is seen in the things He has done throughout history
v. He created all things by His word
vi. He split the red sea
vii. He brought down the Mighty Egyptian nations
viii. He alone is the one who raises up and tears down kings
ix. He is sovereign over creation
Jeremiah 10:6 (CSB) Lord, there is no one like you. You are great; your name is great in power. [6]
x. Power here means strength, possession of controlling influence; often understood as manifesting influence over reality in a supernatural manner.[7]
1 Chronicles 29:11 (ESV) "Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all."
xi. Things attributed to God is
1. Greatness
2. Power
3. Glory: beauty, ornament; glory, splendor, radiance; fame, honor;[8]
4. Victory: eminence, enduring, everlastingness, perpetuity[9], duration, eternity. Describes the quality of something as eternal or enduring.[10]
5. Majesty: weight, power, splendor, majesty[11]
xii. God is exalted above all
Daniel 4:34-35 (NIV) At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.
His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
35 All the peoples of the earth
are regarded as nothing.
He does as he pleases
with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back his hand
or say to him: “What have you done?”
The question I ask is does God need us?
I believe examining these beginning scriptures we see the greatness and awesomeness of God
1. He is Omniscience
a. Omniscience: God’s infinite knowledge and understanding of things past, present, and future.[12]
b. God’s perfect knowledge of both himself and that which he has created.
Psalm 147:5 (ESV) 5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.[13]
i. Understanding means understanding, competence. Refers to understanding applied effectively and competently in relevant situations.[14]
Psalm 139:1-6 (ESV) 1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
3 You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
5 You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.
c. God knows us
d. He knows the very intricate details of our lives
e. He knew us before the foundations of the world
Hebrews 4:13 (ESV) 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. [15]
a. God sees all things
b. Nothing is hidden from His sight
Isaiah 46:9-10 (ESV) 9 remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,
10 declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ [16]
f. He declares the end from the beginning
g. He determines the course of history
h. He will accomplish all things by His power and His authority
2. He is Omnipresent
a. Omnipresent: Aspect of God’s infinity in which he transcends the limitations of space and is present in all places at all times
Psalm 139:7-12 (NIV)
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
a. God is every where
b. There is no place we can go where He is not
c. He is always with us
d. Regardless if we sense His presence or not
Jeremiah 23:23–24 (NIV): “Am I only a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the Lord. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord.
a. God asks who can hide in secret
b. Does He not fill the heaven and the earth
c. We must remember that God is Spirit
d. He is every where all at the same time
e. He is at the beginning of creation and at the end
f. There is no where we can go from His presence
1 Kings 8:27 (NIV): “But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!”
a. The highest heavens cannot contain Him
Isaiah 66:1 (NIV): This is what the Lord says: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be?”
a. God is every where
3. He is Omnipotent
a. Omnipotent:
i. God’s unlimited authority to bring into existence or cause to happen whatsoever he wills
ii. God’s unconditioned power to do that which he wills in accordance with his nature.
iii. His power and authority is without end
Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV) “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”
a. Nothing is too hard because His power and authority are without end
Luke 1:37 (ESV) 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.[17]
a. Nothing is impossible with God
b. Nothing we face is greater than God
Matthew 19:26 (ESV) 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible[18]
a. It is possible because God is able
b. Regardless of what we face
a. Could be financial challenges
b. Physical challenges
c. Opposition from the enemy
c. May we bring all things to God in prayer because He is able
Genesis 18:14 (ESV) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”[19]
a. Abaraham was 99 and Sarah was 89
b. They were beyond child bearing age
c. But God is able to open up the womb
Isaiah 55:11 (ESV) 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. [20]
a. God’s word will be accomplished because it is backed up by His power and His authority
b. We must never forget in prayer we have a direct audience with the one who holds all life together by His power and His word
Job 42:2 (NIV) “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
a. Thwarted: be or make inaccessible, impossible[21]
b.
Revelation 19:6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns. [22]
a. The term “Almighty” means all-ruling, God (as absolute and universal sovereign):—Almighty, Omnipotent.[23]
Today we have examined the greatness of God, that God is Omniscience, Omnipresence, and Omnipotence
Does God really need us to accomplish anything?
I believe the answer is no
From the scriptures we see His power and authority is without end
He is every where at all times
He knows all things
But He chooses to use us
He chooses to use us as His vessels on this earth
When we come to Christ The Holy Spirit fills us
As we grow in Christ we become more like Him
As we grow in our knowledge of His word, our prayers and our lives align with His word
The sad reality for many of these false teachers is they don’t know God
They elevate man over God
They are simply lost
Jesus said this concerning the blind leading the blind:
Matthew 15:14 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.[24]
