"From Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, wrapped in the love of God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. May mercy, peace, and love be lavished on you!"— Jude 1:1–2 (CSB)

📖 Background on the Book of Jude

The book of Jude is one of the shortest books in the New Testament but carries a powerful message. Written by Jude, the brother of James (and therefore likely a half-brother of Jesus), this letter was sent to warn early Christians about false teachers and to encourage them to stay rooted in their faith.

Jude begins his letter not by asserting his blood relationship to Jesus, but by humbly calling himself a slave (or servant) of Jesus Christ. This posture reminds us that spiritual authority comes through surrender, not status.

🧠 Key Themes in Verses 1–2

  • Identity: Jude writes to believers as “those who are called.” We are not accidental followers—we are chosen, loved, and protected.

  • Security in Christ: "Kept for Jesus Christ" affirms that our salvation is secure, not because of what we do, but because of who keeps us.

  • Lavish Blessings: Jude prays not for just a little mercy, peace, and love—but that these would be lavished upon believers.

💬 Quotes for Deeper Reflection

"God loves each of us as if there were only one of us."— St. Augustine
“Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God's will.”— Dietrich Bonhoeffer
"You are not only chosen and loved—you are kept."— Anonymous

  3. Jude mentions being “kept for Jesus Christ.” In what ways do you struggle to trust that your life and future are secure in Christ?

  4. Mercy, peace, and love are not earned—they are lavished on us. How might your life change if you lived each day with that awareness?
