When God Redirects Our Steps
“A person’s heart plans his way, but the LORD determines his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (CSB)
The Unexpected Detour
A few years ago, Joe had his life all planned out. He knew where he wanted to live, the job he wanted, and even the kind of ministry he wanted to build. Everything looked perfect on paper—until God began closing doors he thought were meant for him. Every “no” left Joe frustrated and confused, but what he didn’t see was that God was gently redirecting his steps.
Months later, he ended up in a completely different city, serving in a ministry he never would have chosen for himself—but it became one of the most fulfilling seasons of his life. Looking back, he realized his plans weren’t wrong, but they weren’t God’s best. He wasn’t rejecting Joe's desire to serve; He was refining it.
Sometimes God’s divine detours are not denials—they’re redirections toward destiny.
Biblical Insight
The Hebrew word for “determines” here is כּוּן (kun), meaning to establish, make firm, or prepare. It implies that while we make plans, it is the Lord who sets them in place—He gives them stability and lasting purpose.
The word for “heart” is לֵב (lev), representing not just our emotions, but our will, thoughts, and inner intentions. This verse reminds us that though we plan with sincere motives, ultimate direction belongs to God.

Father, thank You for knowing the path that’s best for me, even when I can’t see it clearly. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to force my own way.
