The Adventures of Libby, Gigi, and Jesus:
New Wine, New Hearts
Scriptures: Luke 5:33-39
Libby skipped along the sunny path with her blond ponytail bouncing. Her hazel eyes sparkled with excitement as she held a bright red ball. “Come on, Gigi! Let’s play fetch!”
Gigi, the chubby 3-year-old Old English Bulldog with her wrinkly face and waddling walk, barked happily and chased the ball. But when she tried to stop quickly, she tumbled in a silly heap, her short legs kicking in the air. Libby giggled and helped her up.
Suddenly, Jesus was there with them—just like He always showed up in their adventures. He smiled kindly, His eyes full of love. “Hello, Libby. Hello, Gigi. What are you two up to today?”
“We’re playing!” Libby said. “But Gigi keeps tumbling because she’s so excited. It’s like she’s too full of wiggles for her old body sometimes!”
Jesus laughed softly and sat down on a big rock. Gigi plopped right next to Him, resting her head on His lap with a contented sigh. “That reminds Me of something I told some people a long time ago,” Jesus said. “Would you like to hear the story from My Word?”
Libby nodded eagerly and sat beside Him. “Yes, please, Jesus!”
Jesus opened His hands as if holding a special book and began to share from Luke 5:33-39:
“Some people came to Me and said, ‘Jesus, John’s followers and the Pharisees’ followers fast and pray a lot. They look very serious and religious. But Your friends are eating and having fun. Why aren’t they fasting like everyone else?’”
Libby tilted her head. “What does ‘fasting’ mean?”
“It means going without food for a while to pray and focus on God,” Jesus explained gently. “Those people thought being close to God meant following lots of strict old rules—like always looking sad and never celebrating.”
Jesus continued, “I told them: ‘Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is still with them at the wedding party? Of course not! They’re celebrating because I’m here with them. But one day I will be taken away, and then they will fast.’”
Gigi let out a little “woof” as if she understood, and Jesus scratched behind her ears.
Then Jesus told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new coat to patch an old one. The new piece would shrink and make a bigger hole in the old coat! And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. New wine bubbles and stretches as it gets better. Old wineskins are stiff and dried out—they would crack and burst, and the wine would spill everywhere. You need new wineskins for new wine so both are kept safe.”
Jesus looked right at Libby with kind eyes. “And no one who drinks old wine wants the new right away. They say, ‘The old is better.’”
Libby thought for a moment. “So… what does that mean for us, Jesus?”
Jesus smiled. “The ‘old ways’ are like the stiff rules people used to follow to try to earn God’s love—lots of ‘don’t do this’ and ‘look serious all the time.’ But I came to bring something brand new: the joy of knowing God as your loving Father. My love is like fresh, exciting new wine! It’s full of life, forgiveness, and celebration because I’m with you.
If you try to squeeze My new way of love and grace into your old, grumpy, rule-following heart without letting Me change you inside, it won’t work. Your heart might feel like it’s going to burst, just like an old wineskin. Or My joy might spill out and get wasted.
That’s why I give you a brand-new heart when you trust in Me—like becoming a new wineskin that’s soft, stretchy, and ready for all the good things I want to pour into your life. Gigi’s wiggles are fun, but she needs to grow and learn. In the same way, My friends get to celebrate My presence now, and let Me make them new on the inside.”
Libby’s hazel eyes lit up. “So when I feel like I have to be perfect or follow a bunch of rules to make You happy, I should remember You want my heart to be new and full of Your joy instead?”
“Exactly, Libby,” Jesus said, hugging her close. Gigi wiggled in between them, making everyone laugh. “I don’t want you to just patch old rules onto your life. I want to make everything new—your heart, your thoughts, and the way you love God and others. Come to Me every day, and I’ll keep filling you with My fresh, wonderful love.”
Prayer
Dear Jesus, Thank You for coming to bring us new life and joy, not just old rules. Please make our hearts like new wineskins—soft and ready for all the good things You want to pour into us. Help us celebrate that You are with us every day. We love You! Amen.
For Parents or Leaders (Reflection)
Talk with your child: What are some “old ways” (like always trying to be perfect on your own) that don’t fit with Jesus’ love? How can we let Jesus make us “new”?
Activity idea: Draw a picture of Libby, Gigi, and Jesus, or make a simple “new wineskin” craft (like decorating a paper bag or balloon) to remember that Jesus gives us new hearts.
Memory verse: “No one pours new wine into old wineskins… They pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Luke 5:37-38, simplified)
This adventure reminds us that following Jesus isn’t about adding rules to our old lives—it’s about letting Him make us completely new so we can hold all the joy, grace, and love He has for us. Enjoy the adventure together!
